Arbeloa Out, Xabi Next?
By: CSD | July 29th, 2009
Well…crap. One of my favorite players is now off to Real Madrid. Although, I’m not totally surprised after the signing of Glen Johnson. The fee is reported to be around £3.5million which seems really low to me and makes me really worried about the Xabi Alonso situation.
Arbeloa was heavily rumored to be part of Real’s raid on Liverpool and this might be related to that. And with reports of Benitez telling Xabi to sort out his move by midnight, it seems all but inevitable. More than likely, the fee has been agreed on and they’re trying to sort through his personal terms before it all goes public. Of course, that’s just my opinion. I didn’t goto football transfer school.
I was just thinking today about how I thought we were done buying, but when Xabi goes, someone will obviously have to be brought in to replace him. Gerrard could go back to playing CM, but then who would pair up with Torres? We need either a proven striker or play making midfielder and the options right now seem pretty grim. Bah, I shouldn’t worry. Lucas will be our savior, right? Right?

Are you talking about the same Lucas who played a blinder at Old Trafford?, The same Lucas who was Brazilian player of the year when we signed him?. Give the Lad a run in the side then judge him, When Carra first came in people had a go at him but they don’t now do they?, Yossi got slagged but that soon stopped didn’t it.

Agreed Lucas deserves our patience. Great players are developed not purchased.
That said, if Xabi goes, the worst that happens is we push Gerrard back into CM, Kuyt or Babel up front with Torres and Yossi on the right. So, even without spending absurd money we have a formidable starting 11. Not a lot of cover in case of injuries but hardly a reason for panic.

J , I agree totally as we do have quality available due to the young players Rafa has signed over the last 3 years or so, The problem is our fans and the media want headline grabbing signings. This is the time to give the youngsters their heads as long as they are good enough, They have Liverpool in their blood already and are desperately hungry to perform.

How could Arbeloa possibly be one of your favorite players? He was so soft out there. Both he and Dossena were disgraces in an otherwise formidable back line. I couldn’t be happier he’s gone, although I admit Aurelio’s injury complicates things. But with Agger, Carra, Skrtel (I don’t know the latest on his injury) and Johnson, I think we’ll be just fine.

Easy, consistency when we needed it most.

how couldn’t Arbeloa be one of your favourite players? Get’s forward? Check. Knows how to cross a ball? Check. Keeps Ronaldinho in check (while playing out of position)? Check. Keeps his head down & his mouth shut? Check.
get a clue mang.

man rafa screwed this one
arbeloa>glen johnson
arbeloa for one is much cheaper to keep,he can defend better than glen johnson and last season he really did improve his overlaps and his crossing is getting better day by dayglen johnson is good but damn 18m-not even worth 9m if arbeloa is 3.5m-perfect eg of how over-vaalued are english player-no wonder arsene n rafa like to have a good relation with foreign clubs n player

Babel needs a deeper role next season. He is too good to stay on the bench alot. If Xabi does leave we need to play 1 DM, mascherano and play Babel on the right wing and Kuyt alongside Torres

I normally don’t comment on these things, but some of the stuff you guys are saying is ridiculous. Did you watch our team play last year? Rafa, and all of fans for that matter found out that the 4-2-3-1 was easily our best formation, especially with Gerrard playing behind Torres. The two of them have an awesome, often deadly, partnership. If Alonso leaves, there is no chance in hell we play with 2 up top, 3 across, and one behind. If Rafa wanted to play like this we’d still have Robbie Keane for crying out loud. There’s a slim, very slim, chance that Gerrard gets moved back into Xabi’s position when he leaves. The only ways that would happen would be if Benayoun starts behind Torres, which we all know isn’t gonna happen (and shouldn’t), or we signed someone like Gourcuff, which also won’t happen because Bordeaux just bought him and because I can count the number of guys, like him, fit to play behind Torres on my two hands. So, if Xabi leaves, expect to see Lucas starting or for Rafa to buy another more defensive, but creative center mid. I am praying that if Xabi leaves, Sneijder is included in some kid of cash plus player deal. He won’t fill Xabi’s boots, but he’s one of the few who can come close.
Get this thought of a 4-4-2 out of your heads. IT IS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN.

as much as i agree with you Ralphie, you (or anyone for that fact) trying to predict what Rafa will or won’t do is like trying to guess how much gin Fergie drank last night ..

omfg, how can you let Xabi Alonso go? It will be the end of all title hopes if you lose him. And what if Javier Mascherano also leaves? Then you are doomed.
I would never have sold Xabi for less than 60m €, 35m is a joke, at least for Real Madrid. As if Xabi was only half as valuable as Kaka…
This Xabi Alonso deal is really pissing me off, because it increases Chelsea’s and ManUtd’s chances to win the PL (and I hate both of them), furthermore it might give Real Madrid what they need to surpass Barca (which is my favourite club). I wasn’t that concered about CR7 and Kaka, but Xabi might just be the key
Why doesn’t he stay at Liverpool, the best club in the UK?
