Anfield Banter: Fernando Torres, Diego Milito, Giandomenico Mesto (huh?), Shearer still hates Bellamy, Mourinho is still an idiot, Who gives a crap about Darren Bent, & Former Tory leader Michael Howard has offered to be a witness for Liverpool fans
By: Brian | June 20th, 2007* Apparently we’re putting all the chips on Fernando Torres. He wants out of Atletico and who can blame him? I’m not really sure how he’ll work out in the Premiership, but he’s young and has time to adjust. According to the link above we’re offering Luis Garcia in the deal. Well, that sucks, now who am I gonna bitch about turning the ball over every five minutes?
* We have also apparently made an official bid of Ā£13m for Diego Milito. Great. I’m so excited. In that same article, there’s talk of our attempts to acquire Giandomenico Mesto from Serie A side Reggina. Never heard of him. Apparently he can play left back and right back, but is predominantly a right-sided defensive midfielder. I’m assuming we’re bringing him in to play right back though. Anybody know if he’s any good?
* Just the thought of Bellamy returning to his beloved Toon has driven Alan Shearer to drink.
* Why is it that Chelsea and their fans are obsessed with Liverpool? Is it because they can’t beat us when it counts? You would think Mourinho would have better things to talk about, but apparently he doesn’t. He’s out of his freaking mind at some points during that article. Here is the highlight:
The FA Cup final was a special final, an historic one, more than a normal FA Cup final.
Uh, was he watching the same match everyone else was? What a delusional nutter. Seriously, I want those two hours of my life back.
* Finally, Michael Howard QC has offered to be a witness for Liverpool fans demanding compensation from UEFA after they were shut out of the ChampionsĀ“ League final. Howard, a Liverpool fan, is willing to give evidence that UEFA are a shit organization (my words) and that fans who had legitimate tickets and who were barred from entering the grounds deserve compensation. I hope this doesn’t just go away because UEFA deserves all the negative press it receives.

Quick, sign Torres and Milito now, at least they can put the ball into the back of the net!

Giandomenico Mesto is a right back who plays for Reggina and knows how to attack and is good defensively as well. He is a former U21 starlet and always linked with a move to one of the big clubs. He’s very speedy and I think he would fit well in the EPL.

I really want Tevez rather than Torres and I think if we sign the Milito Brothers that will give us six Argentinian players, which will make it a lot more comfortable for Tevez to fit in, but, if Tevez is not in our price range, then by all means, yes, we need to sign Torres.

Thanks Francesco. Sounds like a good buy… even if he is Italian.

I really wanted Bent, because he can almost guarantee you 15 Premiership goals a season, too bad his club is run by retards and won’t realize his true value. I have a REAL good feeling about Torres, I think he could be a very good player for us, same with Diego Milito, who I think would be much better than Tevez ever would be for us.

I could care either way about Bent, either Torres or Tevez would be better buys, but that goes without saying. I don’t see how Charlton can keep him in the Championship, but I’m sure some team will overpay for him. I also think Kuyt will improve over last season.
As for Tevez vs. Milito, I have to disagree. Tevez has proved his worth in the EPL, while Milito has not. Not saying he’ll fail here, but it’s proof over speculation.

Tevez and Milito are completely different players so you can’t compare really, both could form a great partnership, Milito is an out and out goal poacher, does nothing outside the 18 yard box really, where as Tevez loves to get the ball just about anywhere and bully people, I also agree with the Kuyt comment, I thought he had a good season! But one concern I have is, i’m really not sure about this Voronin fella, especially when Javier Saviola is a free agent also! I see him nothing more as a fourth or fifth choice striker.

Maybe you’ll be able to bitch about Torres turning the ball over every 5 minutes :p
I think its a good buy though. He’s fast, strong, good in the air, but his finishing does need some work.
I’ve posted a link to your article to http://www.fanstate.com Hope you and everyone reading will take a look and join!
Go Reds!

FanState is on to something there. My favourite Torres factoid: he was the player who lost the ball the most times in the 05-06 season of La Liga.
Plus, he’s not had a good season at all. I’d be wary about buying him. Maybe England will suit his style, but he’s far from completely proven, even in Spain.

I don’t give a crap about all these stats Linda, he’s a young player who captains his side and leads the front line by himself, of course he’s going to lose the ball! Get another striker up with him, add the quality of Liverpool’s midfield and you should see the player develop into a world class front man.

With fernando torres at liverpool we will have that creative spark which we’ve needed so much this will allow dirk kuyt to get further upfield and from what ive seen he can be quite effective as a box striker.
