Adam Hammill: What the future holds…
By: Brian | May 26th, 2007After watching the Scottish Cup Final today, I’ve come to the conclusion that Hammill is just not ready for the Premiership. He’s an electrifying prospect and I was a bit surprised with the amount of responsibility that Dunfermline had placed on him in such a big game. I don’t know the exact stats, but it seemed like he took the majority of the free kicks and cornerkicks and was quite good in that regard. He had decent placement, but it seemed as if he lacked a teammate with whom he was online. Also, his pace and dribbling skills are undeniable, but that was already known going into this match. What I found the most surprising, and now that I think about it, maybe shouldn’t, was how much attention Celtic paid him. It seemed that he was often marked off the ball. Quite strange and flattering for a 19-year-old.
The things he needs to work on most is probably his patience on the ball and decision making on the fly. At times when he gained possession and was encroached by a defender or two or three, he would try to immediately pass without thinking first. Most of these passes were going lateral or forward, instead of back, which they probably should have gone, and ended up in the grasps of a Celtic player. Also dribbling past three defenders is a waste of time if he makes an errant pass, and he did just that quite a few times. In his defense though, Celtic hounded him consistently and constantly.
I was also disappointed when he didn’t shoot the ball. Twice, at the top of the box, he was given an opportunity, albeit a minute one, to blast it, and both times he looked to pass it inside. The Celtic defenders outnumbered the Pars two-to-one in these situations, so I doubt anyone would have gave him a hard time for going for the goal.
Anyhow, his talent is unquestionable and unfortunately for Dunfermline, and despite the fact that they will be playing in the UEFA Cup next year, Hammill will more than likely not be playing for them. At the same time, I think it’s a waste to put him on the bench and let him star for the reserves. He’s just not good enough to play on regular basis for Liverpool and I definitely see him on a Championship side next year. It’ll be interesting to see which team get his services, but I’d love to see him go to Watford, Wolverhampton, or Southampton.

I think this is a bit harsh on Hammill. In my opinion, he didn’t have his best game today, but he has the skill to play Premiership football. Like almost any 19-year-old, he has room for improvement, but I don’t think one game makes him less of a prospect. Admittedly, if he’d really shined, it would have made me more confident in his abilities on a big stage, but I wouldn’t give up on the kid quite yet.

I’m far from giving up on him. If he’s not in Liverpool’s and Rafa’s future plans for the team, I’d be shocked. I just don’t think he’s ready to contribute to a team that is trying to win the Premiership and a cup or two.
I’ll admit this is only the third game I’ve seen him play. Believe it or not, last place teams like Dunfermline, don’t have matches viewable often. And I agree, this was the worse of the three that I’ve seen, but still, I think it exemplified what he needs to work on.

I think you are being rather harsh - Adam has brought passion and flair to the pars. I’ve been to every game since January (coincidence that we are Liverpool fans), and Hammil has certainly stood out in every game. Saturday’s game was anything but disappointing, remember we were a few key players short. (McManus and O’Brien) I think Steven Kenny may have expected a bit too much from him. He didn’t appear much in the second half, but I think Celtic were well aware of his capabilities and his pace and used everyman spare to close him down.
I know the premiership is a different class to the SPL but give this kid a chance. With the right support and talent on the team, this kid is going to fly.
Regardless of where he plays next season, I know Rafa will be chasing him down in the next year or two.
I’d like to thank him for the last six months - he definately added something to the SPL.
In the small town of Dunfermline, this kid is a legend. Not only showing flair on the field, but also inspiring young players.
Hammil has the determination, strength and talent to fulfil his dream and play for the reds. (he’s only signed one autograph at East End park, it just happened to be the liverpool shirt hanging in my son’s room). Good luck Adam - hope to see you in HongKong pre season.
