Video: Liverpool v. Manchester City Extended Highlights

By: Noel | January 26th, 2012

Because knowing the final score makes Joe Hart’s heroics far less frustrating. Because Craig Bellamy is fantastic, even if for the final twenty minutes he was on the pitch it was hard not to worry his knees would explode every time he took off. Because the crowd was absolutely phenomenal and we could easily have devoted an entire entry to videos of just that. Because despite his defensive frailties, Charlie Adam did aid in the attack. Because you’d forgotten what pass and move football looked like. Because the first time around you didn’t notice Gerrard flashing two fingers to Joe Hart to signify the two penalties he scored. Because you’re still trying to wrap your head around Martin Skrtel as an offensive threat. Because Dirk Kuyt and Jordan Henderson, two names who have divided opinion in recent months, both had their best games of the season. And because after the bumpy ride of the past few months it was just good to, in the end, finally be able to watch Liverpool play and take nothing but joy from the experience.

So while you may not quite have ninety minutes free to re-watch the entire thing, surely there are few things you’d rather do this Thursday than take twenty minutes to relive yesterday’s League Cup semi-final.

Thanks for posting. So pleasurable to watch again.  My favourite part was watching Kenny's face at the final whistle, his unbridled emotion and watching him congratulate every player as they left the field.

We would all feel better if we were challenging for first place in the EPL and not currently sixth. That said, in the same competition last season were bounced out by Northampton in the first or second round. The contrast and difference this season is real. Beating Stoke, Chelsea and Man City with only one home game is an achievement.

I salute Kenny's desire and plan to make us compete in every game home and away regardless of its importance.  A winning mentality isn't created over night but it's something that is necessary for the club to move forward.

My biggest hope is that a game like last night can give our newest recruits the platform of confidence to excel for the rest of the season and beyond.

My favourite part is seeing that whole sea of red waving our flags, holding and swaying the scarfs high in the air and singing our hearts out for the team.

It might make us crave for our spot back in the Champion's League sooner rather than later, we could do it this season, we might not, but whatever it is we are on our way up.

It's amazing how up and down the last week has been.  After the Bolton match, I was so down on this team.  It was a crushing defeat, one that made me question how much faith I have in this club - not for the long term, mind you, but for this season and the foreseeable future.  We all invest so much time and effort into LFC here at these boards, none more so than Ed and Noel.  It is tough to keep your belief that the club is going in the right direction after the Stoke/Bolton combo.

But then came yesterday.  Though my stream crashed in the 55th minute, and my work network successfully managed to block my efforts to watch the match at every turn, when I came home and saw the comments on this board...well, it was amazing.  Sports can transcend so much of the mundality (yeah I made up a word - what of it?) of life, which is why we all visit The Offsides daily, weekly, or every once in a while.  Yesterday's result made me remember why it is so wonderful to be a Liverpool supporter.  I couldn't wait to read the post-match write up.  I couldn't wait to see the comments - on Bellamy's amazing pace going forward, on Kuyt's old-school doggedness, on Agger's surging runs forward, on Henderson's confident performance, and even Joe Hart's ridiculous (again) game.  They haven't disappointed.  To see the Kop as alive as it was yesterday, especially when Bellamy scored, was awesome.  It made me want to pack my bags and hop across the pond for the final at Wembley.  Still considering that....even if it means I will be minus 1 wife for...well, forever.

No doubt this season will bring more ups and downs.  More losses to the bottom third of the table, more frustrating play from CHAD, and other surprises that I'm sure we'd all rather not experience.  But it's matches like this, moments like this, that make me proud to support this team.  And to have found this website.

    Thanks Noel and Ed.

Well Ayre announced we have money to spend with 5 days left

  • Lis

Well, during the past two transfer windows we have been rather active on the final day.

  • kenny

    Partly through force. i.e. a leaving Torres. But that's why I commented...possibly a sign.

  • The Carling Cup Final can't come soon enough. Desperately want to see Gerrard lifting up that trophy.

  • Just beautiful to see Kenny so happy and hugging all the players at the end.

  • jpr

Loved the way Kenny shook the hand of every player as they left the pitch. The passion and commitment from each and every player was obvious this match. Woy wud have been in the press room wraving to Sky Sports that Stevie and Charley controlling the midfield aginst City was proof that he had the right selections at Bolton. Obviously Stevie and Charley worked on maintaining position and correct marking in practice the last few days. It was very obvious that they were patrolling the central space in front of the center backs. Watching them swivel their heads at times to make sure their positioning was good was actually a little funny. The one time Charley left a gap, of course, was when DeJong snuck into the space behind him for the goal. As soon as Charley turned his back and moved towards Silva, DeJong made his move into the space. And Stevie came within inches of closing him down. That was some defensive shift from Stevie.

Putting Bellers up top as a single striker was the difference. The mids just needed to find 25 yards of space to play the ball into and Bellers would collect it and then toast the marking fullback. Their is NO answer to explosive pace in yellow boots. He never stopped running. Pressured their fullbacks constantly. 87 minutes. Brilliant. He seems like his fitness is improving along with his knees. Maybe? I hope he's ready for Saturday.

Hope the boys are ready to give Uncle Fergus a great big Anfield welcome this weekend. What a perfect week this could be. A Wembley date followed by eliminating United from their third competition this season. Fergus deserves and will soon appreciate his Europa League place. Hello Fergus.

That YNWA at the end - I get chills every time I watch it.

  • Youlnevawalkalone

    Top Class!!!!
I am speechless. I didn't get chance to watch the game last night.
    Thanks to Noel!!
On another note, Does the author of Liverpool Kop support manure??
All his articles are so negative toward Liverpool!!!
i was wondering if he does it for the hits or if he is really a manure fan, does anybody know??
Glad to see a real site supporting LFC.
    YNWA!!

One does not simply go to that site! That site is uhhhhh.....wrote by a chicken.

  • Suarez from the car park...

noone wants to hear about that site here.  It is what it is, unfortunately.

  • Youlnevawalkalone

So Sorry to dis respect such a brilliant site as this one by mentioning that piece of shite. Thanks for the feedback tho.

  • Waiting for Sterling

Move Skrtel up top and Carroll back next to Agger.  Problem solved.

  • nebhamoo

Say what you want about the lead up play, but Bellamy was absolutely clinical with the finish. May be just stating the obvious, but it gave me tingles watching it again, and watching the King celebrate never ever gets old.

Bring on the champagne now lads. Love your work.

  • Suarez from the car park...

Isn't it amazing how players can try and beat Hart placing the ball this way and that to unsuccessfully exceed his reach, and somehow, Bellamy and Gerrard are just able to finish, even when it's not out of reach.

    Finishing. what's the secret?

  • nebhamoo

Some may call it a gift, and I have to say, like a musician born to be a musician a natural finisher was born to be a goal scorer, but with Bellamy, it's not just his finishing that is inspiring, it's the fact that he will and does whatever is necessary for the team to win. That just makes him all that more special and I don't want to beat up Rafa, but...man if only he could get the best out of him 6 years ago, he probably would've been the difference between finishing second and finishing top.

By no means am I blaming Rafa for that, because as Bellamy has stated already the two just weren't meant to be, so I guess I should just be thankful that Bellamy loves the King as much as the rest of us.

  • CheekyFellow

Happy for the win and for the effort that was put out yesterday.

Like most of the big games Liverpool has won, they're usually followed by a lackluster display. I want to see this type of effort 3 games in a row, not just 1 every 5. Or else it really just means nothing.

  • nebhamoo

Agree to an extent, but mate we're going to Wembley...let's enjoy our successes while they are here and worry about the yet to be fulfilled poor performances when and if they arise, it was only a few days ago that everyone on here, including me, was on the brink of alcohol induced homicide.

Wembley at the very least has to put off thoughts of self harm till after the 26th February.

    3 things:

    1) Despite our position in the premier league I think the style with which we played tonight and the fact that we were knocked out in the 1st stage by Northampton Town speaks volumes for the progress the club's made.. whether or not we're progressing as fast as we should or would want to is a different matter, but we're evidently a better side than we were over the past 2 seasons.
    2) I still think Carroll will come good and he has my full support.. but I think alot of his problems are summed up in the last minute of the game. as soon as he knocks that ball down he should be busting a gut to get into the box for a heading opportunity. As it was the ball found its way to Henderson who was in prime position to cross but with nobody to get on the end of it. I understand that it was the last minute of the game and that Henderson ended up just walking the ball into the corner but it's instances like these that Carroll needs to particularly work on.
    3) Really impressed with the progression of Jordan Henderson in the centre of the park. On the right he's out of his depth because his main attacking strength, some beautiful through balls, is negated and taken out of play. While he's yet to develop a goalscoring threat, in the middle of the park he offers a good attacking outlet against teams playing a high line. Also show's great industry and looks like he'll develop into a great box to box midfielder, without getting too far ahead of ourselves.

  • Suarez from the car park...

Hendo, Adam, Gerrard, box to box midfielders.  Lucas' game will continue developing, and in a couple of seasons will be a box to box midfielder aswell as an awesome DM.

We need someone who can assault the goal mouth, and someone who can put deliveries in from the right the way Stevie G does.  Hendo doesn't even try them.  Johnson, Enrique are mediocre with their final delivery, as is Downing currently.

No point having widemen without end product.

Infact, Stevie G is the only one who does a good job with wide deliveries.  It would make some difference to engaging Carroll, though he's got to improve his movement somehow.

Despite of the defeat,Mancini was happy with the performance of his players at Anfield. And if you pay attention to what he said you'd find his words full of respect to our beloved club. Our deterrence capability against big sides is intact. It speaks volumes about our real stature. The mancs are warned.

Still our players must cope with the rising pressure and try to show us their "Grinta" that makes the LFC fighting spirit so unique around the four corners of the world. And who better than Manure as a contender to outline my saying?

We are the only team that can defeat the teams assembled with big money on a regular basis, and I hope after we defeated the team coming from the wrong side of City of Manchester that we will prevail on Saturday against the other team coming from the ugly side of the same city. Watching Manure and their fans getting back home with their tails between their legs would be such a delight after they tried hard to harm us with the Suarez Saga.So let's avenge ourselves on the battle ground. This must be our time, our place, our game and our revenge.

  • NotTooXabi

Thanks, Noel. Some of the more memorable moments...that I can remember. I was drinking. Weren't we all?

1:25 - Agger moving the play up 30 yards with the grace of Baryshnikov.
4:18 - Downing collects and both Adam/Enrique take up same space. That's three lefties looking to make the same cross. This seems to happen a lot.
6:58 - That's the ball Adam can hit. Could feed the Big Lug for days on that stuff.
7:50 - Agger put some serious stank on that shot. Was it going out of play after that deflection of Richards' leg?
9:54 - Enrique. You're a beast. But you take siestas with the ball at your feet. ándale, pendejo!
11:00 - Sequence of Johnson-Bellamy-Kuyt-Henderson-Bellamy-Kuyt Blast. 7 touches including the deflection off the cross. Absolute bacon that.
12:01 - The save other-wordlly. But that little poke by Skrtel was Fowler-esque.
12:42 - Quality 1s touch outlet by Henderson. Kuyt's 1st touch is stone but works hard to make something. Downing doesn't score. Opposition GK makes a wonderful save. That's a first.
15:03 - What is Glen thinking with that layoff? He's through to goal on his preferred foot? It works out in the end, but had Bellamy not been in Beast mode, I would've wanted Glen's head on a spike.
16:14 - Gerrard is fueled by Anfield. It powers him and his class. Fucking ball to Hendo.
18:10 - If Aguero hits that in, I'd still be drinking. Gasoline.
18:38 - Jordan Henderson. Football. Brain.
    20:00 - Catharsis.

  • ejbauer11

I love that post-Bellers' goal, Kenny immediately turns to the fans w/ both arms raised.

When aguero tried that bike, all I could think of was when berbatov scored that one against us awhile back.

  • Ryan

    I like you very much.

  • Lis

You had me at "Agger moving the play up 30 yards with the grace of Baryshnikov". Brilliant recap.

  • Ed

"16:14 - Gerrard is fueled by Anfield. It powers him and his class. Fucking ball to Hendo."

That's the moment I was talking about yesterday.

  • ejbauer11

What a game. Can't wait for Saturday morning.

Assuming, for a moment, that this is true (which, judging from the source, is as true as the claims of the birther movement): 15.24 GMT Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle is hoping to land Liverpool's young winger Raheem Sterling on loan, according to theDaily Mail. Coyle will face competition from Swansea City and West Ham United should the Reds decide to loan him out.
How do y'all feel about it? Sturridge and Welbeck emerged better from their loan spells. And it's not like he's getting any first team action at the moment...

  • Ryan

It'll give me a reason to watch Bolton Wanderers. Besides to watch them destroy Liverpool. Yooou know.

  • fastrail

Hell yeah. Go for it buddy!

  • Red2death

All for it.  It'll give him a lot more real experience than playing in the reserves.  Loan conditions being that he can't play against us, and he has to start against Utd.

  • Ravenilli

Never thought I would be so happy to see Liverpool draw at Anfield especially this year with all the draws at home.
