Really? On account of fog?
By: Jim | December 19th, 2006At work, I’m known as “the soccer guy,” since it’s a fairly small office and everyone knows everyone else’s business, for the most part. One criticism some of the hard-headed types like to level against me is that “soccer” is a sport for sissies. It’s never bugged me because I know better.
However, I hope my co-workers don’t hear that the Liverpool/Arsenal Carling Cup tie at Anfield was called today on account of thick fog. An hour before the match and the referee figured it wasn’t worth waiting. Anyway, Arsenal comes back Jan. 6 for the FA Cup, and Rafa, in his trademark dry humor, has the best take on what happens next:
“We have a problem now because if we draw against Arsenal in the FA Cup then when are we going to play this game? Maybe we can play for both Cups in one game!”
That would be hilarious. I think they should go with that. It would be a tie no one would ever forget. Screw the rules. Just go with Rafa’s suggestion and everything will be just fine.

Yanks are so hypocritical - soccer is for sissies yet their “football’ involves an egg shaped ball and you rarely use your foot. Genius.
Add to that the fact they run around in tight leggings and pads its a bit gay dont you think?
Then the fact they cant even go a few ‘plays’ without changing the whole attack or defence, they can only do one job at a time!
They dont even think for themselves in the sport as its all set out on a piece of paper for them before hand! How ingenious and spontaneous!
Yer, soccer’s for sissies alright but thats because SOCCER in America is slow, lacking of passion and seen as a middle class sport.

Yep, you’re exactly right - on all fronts.
Now, could you do me a favor and come to work with me one day and repeat this argument the next time someone mouths off? You have the benefit of being able to leave whereas I, saying these words, would be asked to leave - involuntarily.
Anyway, fog … yeah. I really do like Rafa’s idea of playing the Jan. 6 FA Cup tie as also counting for the Carling Cup match. It’s pretty silly, but also funny. Why not? It’s just the Carling Cup, after all.

In the US, soccer is seen as an outsider sport: played by suburban middle-class kids (mainly white) who generally give up the game once they reach high school/college and also played by immigrants. Its a really interesting phenomenum, they way soccer is perceived as foreign (very outsider) and “un-American” therefore “uninteresting” — just like not wanting to learn a language other than English.
