Jermaine Pennant is class

By: Brian | April 7th, 2007

Not world class, mind you, but he’s a game changer. Came on in the 65th minute for a worn out and utterly useless Crouch and played brilliantly, bringing the ball forward with determination, rarely losing possession, and consistently threatening to break Reading’s backline. His game-winning cross to Kuyt was the perfect ending for his tremendous effort.

Arbeloa’s goal was class as well. Great finish, especially from a defender. He played well early, but seemed to fade late.

Carragher was great as well. He really made up for Hyypia, who seemed as if he’s never played a match in his life. Carra was everywhere, clearing the ball left and right, using any legal part of his body to do so. Sissoko and Mascherano were both very up and down. Momo got better as the game progressed and Masch was assaulted left and right by Reading, though the ref rarely saw it.

Of course the ref and his two retarded assistants didn’t see a lot of things. The offside on the Reading goal and Bellamy getting taken down in the box shortly after to name two. If Liverpool had drawn, I would have been irate. They were completely incompetent.

At first, I questioned the taken off of Bellamy, but I think Rafa didn’t want him to go ballistic after getting elbowed in the face, which wasn’t called by the way, and the non-penalty. Bells did not look happy about being substituted off, but I didn’t see him overreact or say anything to Rafa. Hopefully the victory will be enough to cool him off. I don’t think he played bad at all, better than Crouch at least, but he rarely got the ball.

In conclusion, this game was hardly a dominate display, Carra’s determination pretty much kept the ball out of the goal, and deserved man of the match. I hope Rafa learns from this match and decides not to play Masch and Sissoko together unless he plays five in the middle. We need to play Pennant more, he proves himself game in and game out, how Gonzo gets more playing I’ll never understand.

A more objective view of the match.

The “useless” Crouch setup Arbeloa’s goal with a sweet pass right into his path.

Superb first goal by Arbeloa who looks to be a class signing. A goal worthy of any striker.

Was also surprised when Bellamy was taken off. I thought he played well. Proved to be a master stroke though as the two subs combined for a great winning goal.

Correct on Pennant. He’s getting a ton of shit yet has been really good after a slow start to the season.

Could not disagree more on Momo. There’s a man who was absolutely useless. Nearly every pass he made was to a blue shirt. My girlfriend can pass better than that. He wasn’t even good defensively. Constantly left spaces open and had to foul all the time. He’s lucky he didn’t get a yellow in the first half for persistent fouling. I’d have given him one. I like Sissoko, but ever since he got back from injury he’s been absolutely and total shite. Can’t make a 3-foot pass. I was screaming for Rafa to take him off.

The officials did just fine. It’s the easiest thing to whine about officiating after every game. Whine when it’s really warranted. Yeah, they missed an elbow on Bellamy, but there was no PK. Nothing else controversial at all. Like I said, if anything, Momo should have gotten carded much earlier than he did.

    Good result.

I’m sorry, but Crouch was useless today. He tries to hold on to the ball way too long. The pass back to Arbeloa was nice but MY GIRLFRIEND could have made that. That play was all Arbeloa in my opinion. Looks as if we could even play him at midfield.

I just wish Bellamy would have got the ball more, but I definitely think it was a penalty. Sorry, the guy who tackled him did not even touch the ball.

The reffing was very one-sided. The Reading goal could have been called offside. The Bellamy takedown could have been called a penalty. The elbow to Bellamy’s face should have been a penalty and a yellow card at least. Even late when Reading was desperate an out-of-bounds call which could have went either way, went Reading’s.

It didn’t matter though. The better team won, deservedly so.

Ha ha ha ha ha! My bad, SGD… just a tad tipsy. Was involved with that game while writing. Meant Reading. Not much difference though, come to think of it. Sorry.

I missed the game so I was frantically looking for the score……………… Arebola’s goal was utter class, Pennants ball to Kuyt was the best I’ve seen this season from a Liverpool player.
Nice to see us win (even if I didn’t see it!), and don’t be too hard on Crouchinho, in the previous two games he was a diamond.

I will fully admit to being a Crouch hater and it’ll probably take a 30 goal season and a Champion’s League trophy to end that.
