Liverpool 1, Shanghai Shenhua 0: halftime thoughts

By: Brian | August 3rd, 2007

Let me first say, Shanghai Shenhua may be feisty, but it’s clear they are the inferior squad. They would might be able to prevent relegation from the Championship, but I doubt it. With that said, it’s hard to judge just how good we are playing, being up 1-0 really isn’t that impressive.

We’ve made a lot of little mistakes that have really not ended up costing us and at times we went for the long ball pass and though successful at those attempts, I’d much rather see us just try to bring the ball up by moving it around, finding holes and creating space. We also seem to let Shanghai’s physicality get to us, which is a little disheartening considering the EPL will be tougher.

Individually, Leto has been a beast. The kid has size, is quick, pacey, and is great on the ball. It looks as if we’ve added another weapon to our arsenal. Insua has been tremendous as well and might be ready for the senior squad. Leiva has made a couple of mistakes but for the most part has played well. And Momo has continued his great preseason while playing up. I guess Leiva is the holding/defensive midfielder.

The goal was a nice Benayoun to Torres hook up, with El Nino doing a cheeky little squib kick to lob it over the sliding keep.

All right, sorry about the brevity about this, but I got to go.

Agree with your first half notes - but I was disappointed with Torres’ effort. He’s either not fit, a bit lost or not very inspired. Either way, he needs to show more work. Cases in point: Yossi the entire match; Kuyt in the second half. Wow is Paletta not up to the challenge.
