It is said that there are lies, dammed lies and statistics. Chalk up one more idiotic report to this particular idiom.

The Association of Football Statisticians apparently released a report (no link available although Bob has his take here…) that used statistics to come up with the Top 100 Players of All Time.

In a sport where elan, flair and creativity count for more than passes completed or successful tackles, it seems ludicrous to try and categorise players through such objective measurements. Equally, the sheer volume of players from the last few years (think Pires, Gary Neville and the very limited Diego Simeone) compared with the low-standing of such greats as Puskas (20) and Di Stefano (22) shows the paucity of statistics collected back in the day.

Clearly there must be any number of methodolgical issues with a Statisticians report that omits George Best for Al Daei or that places a water carrier like Didier Deschamps above a magician like Roberto Baggio. Oh, and I just saw that Sylvain Wiltord not only made the list but is ranked 58th.

The full list for your discussion is below, but my top 10 would be:

1. Pele
2. Maradona
3. Pusckas
4. Beckenbauer
5. Di Stefano
6. Cryuff
7. Baresi
8. Platini
9. Zidane

    3. Johan Cruyff
    4. Maradona
    5. Pele (which i think is over rated because he was the first oh his kind)

it is absolutely crazy to nmae the players in order considering that many are different in their football abilities and played in different times and leagues. however the best players that ever graced the sport are without a doubt three , Zidane , Maradona and pele and the rest are all great but those three stood out the most.. comeon diego is undefinable and zizou is just the best technical player ever and the greatest artist in football and pele his goals speaks for himself….

so it is ZMP and thats the definition of football with all the rest of greats

Where is Claude makele? he has been the backbone of club bestowed with the honour of Greatest club of the 20th century. Few have matched him in that Makelele position. His forced departure from Real Madrid left a void that has not filled by any other player for 4 seasons now. He owns the Makelele position-unparalleled defensive midfielder who made this job look easy and clean. Most defensive midfielders tend to over stretch and cause many injruies to opponents. He is worthy of a top 20 spot. The resurgent Chelsea under Mourinho had Makelele as a master piece in the reshaping of the new Chelsea. He’s the smallest in the field but does the greatest and toughest job. Many games he played at Real Madrid providing good cover for Hierro. Hierro and Terry’s job is much easier with Maka on the field.
