FIFA World Player of the Year Shortlist

By: ed | October 10th, 2007

Here’s the shortlist, in alphabetical order. Discuss:

1. Buffon
2. Cannavaro
3. Cech
4. Cristiano Ronaldo
5. Deco
6. Drogba
7. Essien
8. Eto’o
9. Gattuso
10. Gerrard
11. Henry
12. Juninho
13. Kaka
14. Klose
15. Lahm
16. Lampard
17. Marquez
18. Messi
19. Nesta
20. Pirlo
21. Ribery
22. Riquelme
23. Ronaldinho
24. Rooney
25. Terry
26. Tevez
27. Thuram
28. Torres
29. van Nistelrooy
30. Vieira

My vote’s for Messi but the most under-rated player on that list would be Riquelme. The man’s an absolute magician. If I were to make a team from the shortlist, it would look something like this:

GK - Buffon

RB - Thuram
CB - Nesta/Marquez
CB - Cannavaro
LB - Lahm

RW - Messi
CM - Essien
CM - Gerrard
LW - Ribery

Withdrawn Striker - Kaka

Striker - Eto’o

van nistelrooy is a much better striker than eto’o, the only reason you don’t pick him is because you’re a scouser and V Nistelrooy crushed you when he was with united.

Stupid pointless award. How can you have an award for the player of the year and not base it on the players performance in that year. Buffon, Cannavaro, Stevie G, Tevez, Thuram, Viera, Terry (not Carvalho)? They are all world class players but based on last season they should not be on this list. Also note the absence of european golden boot winner Totti, as much as I hate the bastard he was fantastic. Also considering liverpools defensive record at least one of Cags, Finnan or Reina should have made the list.

Tort - not too many defenders/goalies (just 7) made the list. I think Reina will be there in a couple of years and although they are two of my favourite players, Carra and Finnan are a little one dimensional to get in this sort of list. Agger could be one to watch for this list though…

Garbage how could u pick Torres,Thuram,Canavaro,Henry,Eto’o,
    Tevez,Terry,Cech and all i’ve forgotten leaving Totti,Ibrahimovic,Fabregas,David Villa,Kolo Toure,Vidic, to mention the least….

Thats totally Nonsense…These guyz needs to be reminded of some players they just hate….

I understand they hate English Footie in some reasons but atleast reality should be real….U cant cheat none with the nominations they’ve given out….Henry played 17 games last season,Eto’o i dont remember hom many games but few,Cech the same,Thuram was the setback for barca last season,Canavarro was the most sent of player of the season,Torres never made nobody look at him,….eehne
    Its simply Nonsense….

I dont say they are bad players or so they are may be the best out but we should cherish the Best players of the season without looking at wat name that is….

Its so irritating i’m glad i’m not in their Commettee otherwise it’s embarassing…

Me just learnet my Englandish, and sorry if no right.

I supporting Liverpool for 8 years, Valencia fan all life.

I am thinking of Kolo Toure in the listing. And I am thinking of Fabregas in listing. Why not these two are in the listings? I will like very if Fabregas play for Valencia or Liverpool. I will like very if Toure play for Valencia or Liverpool.

I will happy am if Valencia is played Liverpool off Champions League finale. I not know to support!

Good game I thinking of it be. I hard it say this, and I thinking of Liverpool winnings 1-0.

For just having learned English, Jose articulates himself better than half of the bloggers on this site.

Considering Jose is just learning English (’Englandish’is not commonly used lol), I’m very impressed, especially as he’s teaching himself (I think that what Jose’s trying to say when he says “I teaching minus a educator”.

Why is it that people can learn so quickly our native language, despite it being one of the hardest to learn, and we struggle so much with others.

Let’s compare how long it took Cesc Fabregas to learn English (at the tender age of 16), and how long it took David Beckham to learn Spanish!

I think we need to work harder to educate ourselves in the language of foreign country.

Yeah, you’re learning English, but I may start using the word Englandish instead, since I like how you call the language better. Work on verb tenses next, try getting out of the habit of using the present participle so much.

I agree with you Peter, why David Villa didn’t make the list is crazy, but here’s another, where exactly is C. Ronaldo? Surely it’s not just me that reckons he should make the shortlist, fair enough he dives more often than a scuba diver but his trickery and ability to beat players, set-up team-mates and score goals for himself makes him one of the most complete attacking players in the World?

    here’s mine:

    Buffon
    Nesta - Cannavaro - Carvalho
    Joaquin - Essien - Gerrard - Lahm
    Juninho - Riquelme
    Drogba/Villa

i couldn’t decide on the striker, but Joaquin is an exceptional winger with Valencia. he should be on the list if Ribery is on the list…

sorry i am not that inclusive in the selection of world player of the year but the list from my perspective, has a lot do with names not the actual perfomance of the year . i am a full time arsenal suppoter but the inclusion of thiery henry(fomer asernal) is queer Etoo and many other big names furthermore Gerrad is hard working but not yet there
