Video: Liverpool v. Manchester United Extended Highlights

By: Ed | January 29th, 2012

The out-Stoking of Stoke at Anfield two weeks ago, followed a week later by the utter shambles of a performance at Bolton, set the table for a four-day stretch in which Liverpool’s future, not only in the two domestic cup competitions, had been placed in the balance by a fairly significant portion of those who fancy themselves supporters of both Liverpool and collective unrest. And I guess when you consider how the week played out in an alternative universe—out of the League Cup after failing to respond to Edin Dzeko’s go-ahead goal on Wednesday, out of the FA Cup after succumbing to waves of United pressure late in the first half and at the start of the second—there could have been enough justification to make drinking, ranting, and typing all in caps a full-time gig.

None of that happened, however, and yesterday Liverpool got the win to cap a swift turnaround of the climate around the club and seal progress to the 5th round of the FA Cup, where a home date with Brighton—whom Liverpool defeated 2-1 in the 3rd round of the League Cup back in September—awaits. Yesterday’s victory will be remembered for a number of things, some of them positive, some of them negative, and few more unfortunate than the overly righteous journalistic prosthelytizing it spawned.

So while you’re waiting for someone else to tell why you’re wrong on any number of sociocultural issues, you might as well take in the extended highlights from the win and relish revel in another terrific result while you eat relish.

It is mentioned by managers and players and pundits alike... As the football cliche goes, 'we have turned a corner'. Hopefully we have, time will tell, especially with the next game at Wolves looming. The beating of the lesser team still remains an issue. However, not to piss all over the parade, if Liverpool show even half of the fight and belief against Wolves that they have shown this week against the Manchester clubs, three points should not be a problem. Hopefully Liverpool continue to grind out the results, which hasn't been the case so far this season. Also with the impending return of Suarez on the horizon, may be, just may be Liverpool have 'turned that corner'.

i don't want to be counting my chickens just yet, but tottenham is probably the biggest threat standing between us and a cup double, I would feel fairly confident against any of the remaining teams.

and is Suarez back? or is it one more game?

  • tony

Srarting Adam vs Spurs will be suicidal. Might as well put him on the goal line just in case there's a shot past Reina.

  • fastrail

Damn, thought I was the only one. I always feel scared when Spurs comes to mind. Maybe that's largely thanks to their 4-0 win against us earlier, even before the red card you could see that they were dominating us, especially the middle.

If I'm not mistaken, there is one more game. So he should be back against Spurs.

  • Kev00

hopefully Spearing will be back to full fitness, Carra looked a bit lost at times in the holding midfield position. And we also have a chance to get our tactics right on feb. 11 before any potential FA cup meeting.. I actually didn't see the 4-0 drubbing, but i would assume they won the game in the middle

On a lighter note, it's amazing how much better this weekend was than last w the win.

  • GerrardsBoxingCoach

Lil Miss Suarez is adorable, and she holds a scarf up with the best of them.

  • Mike

And almost as adorable is Lil Luis himself, particularly after the first goal.

  • Prad

If you thought lil Luis was adorable after the first goal, you need to see him after the second one. It warms the heart.

So we got Brighton in the Fifth Round....I don't know if I should be happy or scared. Is it normal?

  • Sandro

i would've been more confortable against chelski

  • McrRed

But we did knock them out earlier in the Carling Cup so at least they're not an unknown article ...

Thx for the vid. Completely nitpicking here and apologies if this kind of feedback is unwanted or bothersome, but don't you "relish in a result" and "revel in a result"?

Here's some fun rumor mongering from a comment on a Guardian blog:

"I have my contacts at the club and apparently Kenny and the Liverpool staff have realised Carroll was a massive mistake. He is the most unprofessional player in training, goes out most nights in Liverpool and he openly admits he absolutely hates the city of Liverpool and returns to Newcastle whenever he can. I'm Londoner and I don't really see much difference between Newcastle and LIverpool. It is one thing being a crap player but it is even worst when you don't even work hard to improve. Kenny and the club are trying to save face by asking clubs to trade a striker for him, so they are not seen to be making a massive lost on him, but everyone knows he is a terrible player and cannot get a deal. Expect a swap deal with Newcastle for Demba Ba in the summer. Ba has a 10 million escape clause and they know they will need more to replace him and still think Carroll can recapture his fluke form last season for his home town club. The only stumbling block is Newcastle who want to rip Liverpool off again by asking for cash and Carroll."

Fun to read rumors, eh? I have heard the bit about Carroll going back to Newcastle every chance he gets before, but who the hell knows what the truth really is about this stuff.

  • Antonio

No club will trade their striker for Carroll, let alone the quality of Tevez. Unless the ManC coaching staffs are crazy enough to  think they can polish him, which Liverpool initially thought they can, apparently they fail so far.
Carroll had 2 good moments in the ManU game, one lead to a goal, the other hit the post. The latter was a trademark, I believe we should put in more this kind of crosses to make Carroll worthwhile. Other than that, his first touch still poor in most of the time.
Having say that, Kyut is the kind of player that will capitalize those knock down by big CF. You can see him straightening both his arms and you know he going to take a crack on goal.
Liverpool turns into a Cup tournment team. I wish them continue progressing in the FA Cup, last 16 to 8, 8 to 4, 4 to 2 and Final. They will meet some big guns on the way, however after seeing them knocking out big guns in a single week, you want to be optimistic, Giant killer, you can call it. How sarcastic to say it, Liverpool use to be a Giant ourselve.....

  • Mike

That finish by Kuyt was just perfect: perfect body shape, eyes through the ball, perfect connection. I don't know if Wednesday's performance and yesterday's strike are enough evidence, but here goes anyway, Kuyt is BACK!

  • ejbauer11

That makes me want to harm someone. I don't see why his reaction shouldn't be: f-ck mike Ashley, he'll wish he'd never sold me, but I guess most Geordies prolly don't consider Ashley the true owner given his tenure. Ugh. Come good son, we all want you to. Was reading or listening to a podcast the other day that said he's unbelievably shy and won't even do phot shoots / public appearances for sponsors...I'm sure the transition to pool was hard. Didn't he live w his parents prior to the transfer? Until I hear Kenny or Stevie say different I'm 100 percent behind the kid

  • nebhamoo

Well said Edward...Carroll had a blinder of a game for us against the mancs...I am sick of all the negativity surrounding him, the point is we did not personally pay 35 million for him, the owners did. So if he doesn't work out its not like they are never going to open up their purse strings, they are after all here to succeed after all.

Carroll is only 22 or 23, he is the kind of striker that normally doesn't mature till they are in their mid to late 20's. Give him a break, show him the kind of support that we normally provide all our players and if he doesn't pan out, it's not all bad cause we could've spent 25 million on a keeper who defends a corner like a gangster, takes out all the innocent bystanders, while leaving his opponent standing waiting to get a free shot off.

ps. Downing truly is shite...sorry, until he isn't that is...like Lucas.

  • Ed

You're probably right, edited and enhanced.

    Revel in that.

  • Momo

Now the Suarez saga is behind us,it's obvious that we came out of that stronger and more determined to win silverware. Pretty good to know that Scouseland won't be trophyless this term.

  • purify_the_body

It's not over. Suarez will take the field at Old Trafford in 2 weeks!

  • Khaine

    Nor have we won anything.

  • CheekyFellow

What are the names for these two commentators?

  • Ed

    Clive Tyldesley and Jim Beglin

  • CheekyFellow

    Thanks.
