Liverpool 2, Manchester United 1: The Man for the Big Occasion

Liverpool 2: Agger 21′, Kuyt 88′
United 1: Park 40′

Liverpool progress past a Manchester side in a cup competition for the second time in four days, this time defeating United on the strength of a late Dirk Kuyt winner. After the nadir at Bolton, it’s been a terrific week for Liverpool, first reaching the final of the League Cup with the aggregate win over City, and now fighting through a tense match that was dominated at times by the visitors to get the win in the dying moments.

With five defenders in the team sheet, most were left wondering how exactly Kenny Dalglish would organize his side—Jamie Carragher accompanied Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger in the eleven, along with Martin Kelly and Jose Enrique. Most, myself included, assumed it was a variant of what we saw against Stoke, but it was immediately evident that Carragher was pushed further forward as a defensive midfielder. Ostensibly it was to give Liverpool three in the middle, with Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson in the middle of Stewart Downing and Maxi on either flank, and Andy Carroll alone up top.

And the opening was mostly as advertised, as both sections of supporters were in full voice and both sides scrambled frenetically around. Neither side were particularly impressive, with Maxi’s shot from distance, which David De Gea saved well, the only real moment of quality in the opening ten minutes. Antonio Valencia nearly gave United the lead with a driving run through the left side of Liverpool’s midfield and defense, only for his dipping shot to ricochet off the far post after beating Pepe Reina.

The hosts responded immediately, surging forward and winning a corner off Jose Enrique’s long-range effort. A Liverpool corner earlier in the match gave us a glimpse of their intent to rattle the self-conscious United keeper, and this time it paid off, with Andy Carroll occupying De Gea, Jonny Evans, and Antonio Valencia, allowing Daniel Agger to burst over the top and head home the opener.

A brief spell followed in which Liverpool stayed on top, but they gradually regressed into their own half, providing United plenty of time and space on the ball and leaving Andy Carroll as the lone man at the other end. Their pressure paid off on forty minutes, with Enrique caught flat-footed and a streaking Rafael cutting one back from the touchline for Park Ji Sung to crash home. It was a swift move and a well-struck finish, and it looked as though United would add another prior to the halftime whistle.

Thankfully the break came with the score level, but the visitors picked up where they left off, pressing Liverpool and conceding little possession. Things opened up significantly as the half wore on, first with Andy Carroll scuffing a shot off Chris Smalling and Danny Welbeck timing a perfect run and rounding Pepe Reina at the other end with only Martin Skrtel left to save Liverpool from going a goal down.

Dalglish opted to make two changes just after the sixty minute mark, both of which couldn’t have come sooner. Jamie Carragher and Maxi had both been passed by completely, with the former providing little in an adapted midfield role and the latter sparking the stoppage prior to their substitutions with another dangerous and poorly-executed tackle. Craig Bellamy would follow ten minutes later for Steven Gerrard, who was likely fatigued after featuring for the entire match on Wenesday.

dalglishkuyt
The final minutes were Liverpool’s, and the winner came in the most direct manner possible, as Pepe Reina’s long goal kick was headed into space for Kuyt only yards from goal. The Dutchman composed himself and blasted it past a helpless De Gea, and Liverpool had their second result over a Manchester side at Anfield in a matter of days.

*

As much as we might want to, we can’t talk about this one solely in terms of the football, even if it finished so well. The booing of Patrice Evra lasted most of the match, the away supporters were heard chanting about Hillsborough on multiple occasions, a Liverpool fan was photographed making monkey gestures towards Evra, and reports trickled out about United supporters taken into custody for spitting on the Hillsborough memorial outside the stadium. At times it felt like the match was best viewed through small cracks between fingers, with healthy doses of dread accompanying the excitement the football brought with it.

In that regard there are plenty of questions left off the pitch, and hopefully in some way both clubs find a way to address the volatility that so often feels as though it’s about to bubble over. That it’ll happen prior to Liverpool’s visit to Old Trafford in two weeks is far too optimistic, but we can hope.

As far as the actual match, it was up and down from a Liverpool perspective, with the early confidence mostly erased by United long stretches on top. But they survived nearly everything the guests could muster, and aside from a couple of nervy moments for Reina outside of Park’s goal, United were unable to seriously challenge Liverpool’s goal. No surprise that stalwart efforts from Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger were at the heart of that, and Martin Kelly put in a very good showing on the right.

The midfield was better without Jamie Carragher than they were with him, but it’d be unfair to harshly criticize the man for being asked to fill a void. Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson were solid further forward, with Henderson pushing up in attack late in the match and Gerrard lasting as long as he could muster. Charlie Adam came on to positive effect, and Stewart Downing had another strong showing despite shitting out of more than a few challenges.

Most impressive on the day for me was Andy Carroll, and I’m not really concerned as to whether or not that’s down to the fact that he’s been so poor so often. He was lively from the start, clearly heeding the words of Dalglish post-Bolton, and worked the United defense all day long, often doing so completely in isolation. That he won the header that led to the winner was a justified reward for one of his strongest displays in a Liverpool shirt. And that it fell to Kuyt was the icing on the cake—a man previously struggling for form and influence, he was vastly better against City than he had been all season, and today he’s a match-winner.

So overall, today was a mixed bag, with plenty of reports of regrettable and embarrassing behavior to emerge on both ends as the day progresses. And while can’t ignore that, left to hope the parties responsible are held accountable for their actions, we can celebrate a week that saw Liverpool, as a football club, start to follow through.

Where is the news report of the supposed spitting? This is appalling, a denigration of the memory of those who died at Hillsborough for petty rivalry. Clean up your report please.

Agree. Tevez wl respect the King, no doubt and he wl be a beast. But his salary???? This is something a player should think about when he signs Citeh.....that he will be Mancini's slave coz not many teams can absorb their wages.

  • Kev00

i think tevez is a cancer and i think ferguson knew it.. he didn't put up much of a fight to keep him and he's probably laughing at the ordeal that City have found themselves in

  • McrRed

What ever happens to him, and he's one hell of a player, his Faustian Contract with joorabchian says he moves after two years is up or his family get killed or something...

Window shuts in 48 hours time. Just as well. It's getting chilly in here...

  • Another tiny little thing which you forget about Tevez. He is from Argentina - quite a different climate than the Northwest of England. Hence his home sickness, or longing for a place warm and sunny enough for him to bring over his daughter etc. That tiny little niggle is not going away if he moves from Manchester 33 miles to the West to Liverpool.

  • jpr

He was never homesick. That was just the excuse he was using at the time instead of saying the truth that he can't stand Mancini and would do anything to just get rid of him. He would agree to a much reduced salary just to get rid of Mancini. I think he was agreeing to around $100K at the Italian clubs. He would be VERY negotiable on salary, as they say.

  • lfc80uk

Tevez would be a great addition for Liverpool! City holding out for £25 million! A happy Tevez at that price is a bargain. The Tevez of the last 5 months at that price however would be more expensive a mistake. But should Kenny get him on side, we would have a formidable attacking lineup. Every top team needs 4 strikers however, could you imagine a team consisting of Suarez, Tevez, Bellamy Gerrard. *goosebumps*

  • jpr

Anybody see the article in The Guardian reporting that LFC offered city to Swap Carroll for Tevez? And inquiring what fee they're asking.

  • Latortillablanca

seems like a bogus proposition - Tevez = poison.  carroll hasn't been lighting up the joint, but he's a good team player.  i dont care how many goals tevez scores, i wudn't take him if citeh paid me...

  • kenny

Citeh would pay you a lot

  • jpr

Adebayor and Bellers don't have much respect for Mancini. Along with a list of other players I'm too lazy to look up. Mancini has been shitting on Tevez for almost a year now. Ask West Ham and United fans about Tevez. Most still Love the guy. Tevez would do the business at LFC. He would run through a brick wall for Dalglish, just like Bellers would now. We get Tevez, I'll guarantee you top 4. And we WILL be challenging for the League next season. He would be a model Professional here.

  • kenny

I would love to see that. (not sarcasm)

  • Baldrick

Yes they've also been discussing it on Sky. There must be se truth in it but I doubt it's being driven by Dalglish.

I think I would prefer to keep Carroll !

  • jpr

Keep big Andy and bring in Carlito. We'll be top 4 this year and be well placed for many years as long as Andy keeps working hard and improving.

All I have to say is that it looked like EVERYONE'S legs were in a sword fight today. haha I held my breath many times.....but whatever. WE WON! :D

...but enough about my feelings for Disqus. for the life of me i can't figure out how to post a reply/comment from my phone browser. disqus just wont let me click in the comment box. quite pissed when i'm away and i see all these good posts and comments but i can't reply. have to wait until i get back in front of a pc to post. for the love of fowler can someone help please.

back on topic. yaaaaayyy!!! good job dirky. what a way to get his 50th goal. i knew you'd come good when it matters most.

carroll had one of his better games no doubt. but i wouldn't call him fantastic or amazing just yet. not because i don't rate the guy, in fact i think he played an important part in the win. the winning goal was played to his strength. i'm not calling him amazing yet for the same reason i won't call for kenny's head after bolton, same reason i won't say liverpool is doomed after being in 7th at 22 games played. he did make mistakes in the game sure but everybody makes mistakes. as long as he lessen the mistakes and up the number of good touches, then he's on the right track. keep it up lad.

the unfortunate thing is you just know that the next time carroll makes a bad 1st touch or doesn't win a high ball there will be people who will say he's the worst thing for the club since h&g. as if his contributions in this game didn't happen. so i'll always go for levelheadedness over knee jerk reactionness. (but not during the game of course. when the action is happening right in front of you, all bets are off. haha.)

skagger is the boss. ( or bosses maybe). kept welbeck well back in their pockets. kelly came in after a spell on the bench and the defense was still solid. enrique and his biceps again proved the business, the man u goal aside. i guess his only apparent weakness we can see by now is he tends to overplay the ball a bit when he could've/should've pass. but that's just nitpickings. the awesome foursome is still the awesome foursome.

like i said before the next game will be the big test. the game after the big games. if we keep up the momentum for the wolves game then golden skies.

just so people won't say i'm a buzzkill, keeping expectations low and all that crap, i'll go for "the flood gates have opened for carrol and kuyt". go for it boys

  • Latortillablanca

he's def on the right track.  plus if we go back a few months, someone on here made reference to a study on target men that showed they don't usually figure it out until 27 or so.  so long as he keeps trying as hard as he has, and more importantly, the team around him plays to his strengths like reina, bellers and kuyt did yesterday, he should keep improving.

and ya, fuck disqus.  fuck disqus hard.

    Good post, Deadly ...

Nitpicking from me: Dirky apparently has scored 67 goals for us...but 49 still in the league.

well that was awkward, since my name is deadlydirk and all... haha.

but the most important question. how did u post from your mobile???

are u using the default browser on your mobile? on my nokia i tried the default browser, opera mini and opera mobile. i can see the comment box but its unclickable. all the other buttons can be clicked. i get the "post as" box, i can log in,  but just can't type comment.

maybe i should get a new phone just to comment here.

  • fastrail

Can I say that I was actually quite surprised that we actually scored from a corner?

  • nebhamoo

    We're going to wembley!!!!

And we beat the scum using nothing more than good old fashioned Liverpudlian ingenuity.

Two great days, and more of that to come from here on out.

  • fastrail

Maxi needs Suarez to be effective. Both of them are telepathically linked.

  • fastrail

What makes me happy is that Kenny actually used his subbed to actually win the game. Before you could see that he was so reluctant to use the sub that he has.

  • Suarez from the car park...

had to repost this from the blogs off the [appalling] DT match article written by @nicksinatra:disqus  .  hope he doesn't mind, I enjoyed it immensely, unlike the article.

The FA today awarded the FA Cup tie to Manchester Utd after accepting Patrice Evra's claim that his team in fact scored 6 times. Despite 5 of the goals not being caught by any of the players, the crowd, or the TV cameras, the FA found Mr. Evra a very convincing witness. On other hand,"we found Mr. Reina's testimony to be totally unreliable. He admitted conceding one goal but was unable to come up with any evidence at all ofsaving any of the other 5. Since Mr. Reina could not prove he saved 5 goals, we concluded that they must have been scored". The referee said that he didn't recall 6 goals being scored but couldn't be sure as he threw his notes away after the game.

  • Luis Suarez dentist

    Ha ha fantastic!

  • deadlydirk_killerkuyt

hmmm... where have we heard this before. seems very familiar.

the ref is writing up his full 115 page match report at this very moment.

  • McrRed

The original 115 page document has just four words of truth: "Mr. Suarez is innocent ".

  • Suarez from the car park...

Well, lets hope the ignorant few slink off into the shadows never to be heard from again.

A surprisingly ineffective opposition, shows how much Rooney does for them.  Nevertheless, well handled by our back line, and to be honest, I thought Wellbeck fed off scraps today.

We didn't seem to beable to control the midfield with Carra, Gerrard and Hendo, everything was going through Scholes.  We relied on negating the wings, Fergie's essential supply lines and a damn fine job we did too (Enrique's one mistake aside).

I think that changes with Lucas in the side though I think we were being positionally responsible without being very effective there!!  Should we be buying a Dembele perchance?

It's telling that Citeh have been far more dangerous, often converting from very few chances as we found to our cost earlier this month.  On this evidence Fergie isn't likely to blunt Citeh's drive for the title without a very on song Rooney/Wellbeck/Hernandez.  And what is the point of Berbaflop staying at United as 4th choice striker?  Surely he would rather be playing football?  He can't be that lazy??

As for us, can we do something about translating this determination into a push up the league.  December and half of January were pretty dire, and some of those personnel weaknesses remain for sure.

But if we can make this form stick in the league, then Arsenal and Chelski will be no match for us - they are capable of results but in reality they are pants this season.
Torres is our secret weapon. A non-scoring touch to outdo both Carroll and Heskey.

Kudos to the big guy for making the winner, being integral to torturing De Gea for the first goal (couldn't have been more painful if we were pulling his fingernails out), and almost getting another assist at the end when Kuyt fluffed his lines.  Got to love it, beating Fergie with the most basic of route 1 ball play.

Anyone know when the 5th round draw is?  This is going to be a stiff competition with several EPL sides looking for a moral boosting trophy run.  Chelski, the Arse, no Newcastle now, Villa, Stoke, Everton at the very least.   It'd be great to have a big run in this comp too, but can't help but think there's some serious tests ahead with the inevitable all EPL ties that we always seem to get.

  • jpr

FA Cup 5th round draw is tomorrow at 3:40 PM. Live on FA TV. I guess that's 8:40 PM EST. Dembele would be a good pickup. I'm still hoping we're going to pick up a creative mid or striker before the deadline.

Great game today. Knocking United out of a major cup competition will never get old. Could not have been more devastating to Fergie, getting knocked out in the 88th minute. That's what United does so often. Not today Fergus!! This is the third major competition that Fergie's been knocked out of and he has said the same thing after each one, "Didn't deserve to lose". Well, after the third time, maybe you DID deserve to lose. Have fun on those Thursday nights in Europa.

I was very surprised today that Scholes was SO effective. Always found space and pulled the strings in that midfield. I heard in the first half he completed something like 78 out of 80 passes. Was happy when he ran out of gas. Kelly was very good at challenging Giggs and Evra. He put the steel to 'em and would not get beat. He dispossessed them a number of times. When we play the ball up to Carroll as a target man, our mids just stand around to see where the ball is going to go. They need to move into space well before Carroll heads it, so that big Andy has an obvious knock down ball. Bellers started to do this and he is the perfect guy to pick up possession and attack the goal.

Some big games coming up. Actually all games going forward are "big" games if we want to challenge for top 4. Hope we can use the enthusiasm from todays big win to push on in the league. We'll get Luis back soon, Stevie's looking more fit each match, Bellers is looking great, and SkAgger and our back line are the shitz. Just have to get up as a team for all games going forward.

  • Ed

5th Round Draw is tomorrow afternoon around 3:30GMT

  • Momo

And the FA will manage to put Spurs on our way to avenge themselves off the pitch after we showed everyone here and overseas that LFC are capable to beat their love child any time all the time.

  • purify_the_body

Sure, Dembele's a great young player and we need more midfielders desperately. We played Carra at defensive midfielder today(!).

I am a big Kenny fan and don't overreact to this, but we can win those games we keep drawing at home if Kenny manages the team better. He should start treating Swansea, Norwich and Bolton with the same level of respect and preparation he does City and Utd.

  • Latortillablanca

    Mauricio "11 positions" Isla!!!!

  • fastrail

Is he coming? We seem to be very quiet about transfer. It seriously looks like we won't get anyone in January.

  • Latortillablanca

impossible to say, but if we can only sign one guy, he'd be my choice...

  • Luis Suarez dentist

Fantastic win! Not a game for the purist but in Skagger we have a fantastic pairing at the back. As for Kuyt - fantastic and chuffed for him as nobody works harder for the team.

The Karma finish was amazing and loved seeing Luis cheering the boys on. Evra deserved every boo he got the man is a lying scumbag.

In 2 weeks time lets go and beat them at the old toilet with a Suarez winner.

    YNWA

  • JoseNose

I hope they just let off field stuff be. I watched the match on TV and the only thing distinctly evident was the booing, which is foreseeable if not understandable.

  • Latortillablanca

    my two bits:

-ugliest game i've (ever?) seen man u and liverpool play.  hideous.  but to find a way to win in that type of game rly points to the mental toughness of this team, and at the end of the day, every win is beautiful!

-if i remember correctly, there were about 4 'target man' headers (long balls just passed midfield) that andy attacked in this game in a way that we have not seen with near enough regularity (both in terms of the pass and in terms of andy playing on it).
the first couple had no one running onto the flicks - and then mr. steel sack craig bellamy came onto the pitch and immediately took up the positions that those flicks had been begging for. dirk got the idea as well, reina is great at lookin for that play, and ultimately it led to the goal - playing to your target man's strengths, watta concept!!!!  now, #9 gets a lot of flack for not scoring goals (justly), but if him and reina/our defenders can hit this play with more regularity, it could be the key to increasing his confidence.  the key though is that the wingers/support striker/cams look for these knock downs and just pin their ears back and run into that space whenever they see the big man rise.

i dont think we can say the big guy will have suddenly figured it out and the floodgates have been opened after this performance: still taking up retarded positions, not attacking in the 18, balls not sticking in hold up play, not anticipating anything anywhere, but until he gets his two left feet together, this can be an extremely effective play for us. and if we could just cross the ball into the box for him, say, 8-10 times a game, instead of 3-4, it would do him a world of good.

Now, if we could sign Isla and that kid at groningen, we may be looking back on this week as a true turning point in our season...

    YNWA

  • Carroll was amazing.  The way he held up the ball and linked up play, dropping deep to win the ball... I wish he had scored with that one... I hope someone makes a Carroll highlights reel for the match on youtube..

One minute really bothered me though... the 80th minute... Piss poor crossing, indecision, and everyone trying to score one for himself...

  • sink257

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v... < There's a comp of Carroll vs Man Utd

  • Latortillablanca

overstating it quite a bit on the hold up play there, mate... and generally speaking we dont want him anywhere near as deep as he was coming in the first half, but that was on our wingers/mids...

  • PDubz18

In the first half Kenny told the whole team to drop back and defend deep until the whistle. That's why he dropped so far back; you can see that he was up high until he looks to the touchline and then drops back behind the ball.

  • Latortillablanca

guyz, playing d is one thing,  im talkin when we have the ball he's showing for the ball at midfield like he's wayne rooney...

  • He had to drop back because United's possession was too good and Liverpool's pressing (especially in the first half) was not as good.  When teams play such possessive football, the choices are:

    1. Intense pressing like Real Madrid do these days,
    2. Letting them have the ball but in bad positions to hit them with the counter (Liverpool's defence is not there yet, and I don't see Downing and co countering and scoring, honestly... Bellers excluded)
    3. Play a balanced game with a good holding midfielder, which is greatly missing.United was just keeping the ball, letting Liverpool congregate outside the box to block Reina's view so that one of their oldies can blast it hard past Reina.  They didn't make much of an aerial threat, didn't try any fancy flicks or tricks, with Nani out and the Berbs benched.... The countering element was low, with Welbeck all alone up front... The game plan, with this lineup, is to score a screamer, it seems.  Either that or use the screamer as an assist for that player O.G. we've all heard so much about. It was a good United that played today, not the best lineup, but a solid performance, even if it was one dimensional at times.

As for AC, I might make the highlights reel myself if no one does.

  • Latortillablanca

i honestly can't describe anything from that game as 'too good'. i dunno, maybe its jus me, but that game was hideous.  feelin u on the counter game - that weird as 351 only works if we're quick on the break, and enrique and downing in particular looked like they had been blindfolded and spun around a couple dozen times before they went out on the pitch today...

AC, im not clownin on him, mate - i love the kid and and he did some nice things, gave his all, and essentially won the game for us at the death, but c'mon "excellent" and "amazing" in reference to his hold up play...?

  • Suarez from the car park...

LTB!!!!!!  Welcome back.  Time to make some noise again.

Carroll was busy pulling De Gea's fingernails out for the first goal (torturing the lanky git), created the winner for Kuyt and then almost got an assist for a third when Kuyt inexcusably fluffed his lines.

I'd say that was a pretty good day at the office for the big lug.

You had a bad week?  If so, watch the Bee Movie with the little-uns, it'll do you the world of good.

  • Etipok

wtf??? we've dumped the champions and the champions-elect out of 2 cups in a short few days. we thoroughly dominated city over the 90 mins at anfield and whilst our team seemed tired and unable to press united like we did city, they still showed passion, determination and belief to beat a team much fresher than our own. kenny showed nous and guts to address tactical issues. an excellent display by all concerned including suarez with his jubilant celebrations. happy happy days! well done lads!

  • Latortillablanca

of course dude, jus arm-chair quarterbacking over here...

  • ejbauer11

Great win. Hopefully keep it going. YNWA.

  • purify_the_body

Carroll is what he is, but he deserves credit for one wonderful assist and maybe another ugly one, as De Gea was busy pushing him out of the way instead of watching his line or claiming the ball...props to the guy for making an impact.

Kenny really did seem to handle the selection and subs well -- such a relief to not come out in 5-4-1. It was close as hell to going to Old Trafford, but in the end we got the better of them and the win. A great day!!

  • Etipok

personally i think carroll was excellent today. he showed some fantastic touches, held the ball up very well, got an assist and hit the bar. ok, so he didnt look like a £35m player but we knew we were paying for potential not the finished article and when thats the case it is important a player shows improvement and i believe he has. for me this was probably his best game this season.

  • MR. BIG GAME, SIR DIRK KUYTTT!

I just finished watching the game now on delay. I was totally expecting the shot to be saved cuz that's just what happens to shots that originate from a Liverpool foot. So I was extra delighted when I saw it go in, and EXPECTED his second effort to go in. But no such luck that time. Brilliant game, amazing team spirit and effort, WONDERFUL Kop support. Can count the moments I shouted at Downing and Adam on one hand! (Carroll would require both hands and probably one foot, but whatever, POSITIVENESSSSSS!)

This week is karmic balance for the frustration that the whole of the season has proved to be. Let's enjoy it for as long as possible. YNWA!

  • Suarez from the car park...

    lol "
Can count the moments I shouted at Downing and Adam on one hand! "

Let's not just enjoy it, let's bloody well put those performances in and get up that league!!!!

  • Lis

I could get used to these late winning goals.

  • justin

    YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

    Haha. Couldn't resist doing that.

Those celebrations, damn, bloody damn priceless.

Always love these images with Kenny grinning with grumpy old redface in the bground.

    Can't get enough! YNWA!

  • Happy for today's result, albeit under no misconceptions that we were amazing and played how we should.

But for now, just happy to see Kenny, Kuyt, Agger and other long-time, hard working and loyal servants of LFC to have their moment in the sun. YNWA!

  • Latortillablanca

no doubt. now we gotta grind out results like the last two against the shitty opposition...
