CL 1st Leg: Arsenal 1 - 1 LFC

By: CSD | April 2nd, 2008

Well I must say this wasn’t the thrashing I hoped that the Reds would give Arsenal, but it’s the next best thing. You can’t complain about coming back to Anfield without having a goal deficit.

Arsenal retained possession much more than Liverpool did and created more chances and I was somewhat surprised that they only scored once. I figured at home if they could put one in, they would be able to find a second. Liverpool didn’t create the opportunities as Arsenal did. Their play was more reactionary and tried to capitalize on the counter attack.

I have to pick Steven Gerrard for man of the match for the great run he made, taking on a box full of defenders and making a pass that found Kuyt. Kuyt also worked his ass off which was good to see. I’m still not as impressed with Babel. I think he can do better. He just seems very timid and gets a deer in the headlights look when he is close to goal and gets possession. If he can get to the point where he’s reacting quicker and more fluently, he’ll be a great force on the left side.

I’m not surprised to hear Wenger whining that Hleb should have had a penalty, but in a match that showed no yellow cards at all, it would have probably taken a brawl to have one awarded. There were a few instances where I thought the Gunners were being quite rough with Torres, but that’s how it goes. All there is left to do now is wait and see what happens this Saturday when Liverpool go back to Emirates Stadium and what impact that match will have on part III Tuesday. Anything less than a win and Arsenal should be right where we want them.

As a neutral, Hleb was definitely pulled down in the box, on a promising run in, and that’s a penalty in my book. But, you sometimes get calls and you sometimes don’t. The ref was overall really lazy. I’m all for letting them play, but what he called vs. what he didnt … it just made no sense to me. Good result for Liverpool. It would have been nice to see a bit less negative play from the Reds once the goal went in - they gave up a bit. Arsenal’s finishing was poor, and poor Bendtner getting in the way of a certain goal was fortunate for you. I hope to see Liverpool have a bit more spirit in the second round, despite winning with a 0-0. I agree with you that Gerrard was fantastic, especially on the goal. Great dribbling skill.

shocking, another lucky break goes liverpools way. If benitez doesnt have a champions league leprechaun shoved up his ass the pool never make it past the group stages. Its honestly getting ridiculous, if you at least had ricky “I give myself to jesus” Kaka then there could be a possible explanation…

liverpools goal could easily have deflected out the other way, Hleb was clearly pulled down (I think the refs angle was blocked by Kuyts back), and bendtner couldnt get out of his own way. (His lack of coordination is really getting to me).

Gerrard, Mascherano and Kuyt all had very good games though. Should be an interesting 2nd leg. I eagerly anticipate an arsenal player randomly being sent off 30 minutes in for a questionable call.

from a neutral’s perspective, overall a good game i must say. I thought Arsenal were the better of the two teams, although that had something to do with liverpool not pressing them until the ball was near the 18 yard box, allowing them to freely pass the ball around where there was no danger. It was clear to me that arsenal needed to keep the ball moving faster and push it wide for crosses into the box, since both Mascherano and Alonso were marshalling the D area, so arsenal’s lovely intricate passing was breaking down. But Liverpool sure know how to play a defensive game and i feel that Arsenal will still go through despite this bad result.

Overall a good result, but yet another goal conceeded on a set play. If Liverpool could defend there they probably would have won the league.
