Anfield Banter: Bolton want Cisse, Atletico don’t want to give up Torres, LFC is the top ranked UEFA CL English club, & Guthrie goes out on loan to Bolton

By: Brian | June 21st, 2007

* With already two of the ‘terrible triumvirate’, Bolton is looking to add Djibril Cisse to go with former Reds Nicolas Anelka and El-Hadji Diouf. Problem is they want him at the bargain basement price of £6m and Cisse has recently stated that he wants to play Champions’ League football next season. In other words, even if Sammy Lee can offer twice that amount, he’s probably not going there.

* It looks as if Atletico Madrid is willing to do whatever is necessary to hold on to their 23-year-old captain. Well, I guess it’s up to Torres, but not having the opportunity to play European football next season can’t help their cause. Also, coming off a bad year, he might just be looking for a change of scenery and what better club than the Spanish Reds?

* Liverpool was named the third highest seed for next year’s Champions’ League, behind only All-Cheaters Milan and Barca. All four English club qualifiers were named to the top eight seeds, including that little club down in Fulham, but LFC were the highest ranked of the four.

* Finally, Danny Guthrie, 20-year-old midfielder extraordinaire, will go out on a year long loan to Bolton where he can learn from the likes of Gary Speed and Kevin Nolan. I’m not sure he’ll see much of the pitch there, but will probably have a better chance of playing there then at LFC. Is Sammy Lee trying to butter our bread for a Cisse deal?

    Brian,

Hoesntly you liverpudlians should stop being cry babies and start winning trophies, for a change. Because, no amount of mud-slinging is going to change the fact that Liverpool lost to Milan. Calling Milan a cheat is as ridiculous as Sheffield United’s claim that they went down because of irregularities at West Ham.

    Ganesh,

Liverpool need to start winning trophies? Yeah, do I need to tell you their history. Okay:
    18 English top flight Cups
    5 Champion’s League Cups
    3 UEFA Cups
    3 UEFA Super Cups
    7 FA Cups
    7 League Cups

Is that enough trophies for you? And I won’t even include the even lesser Cups.

Italy makes a mockery of the game and itself with scandal after scandal and deserve any and all sort of derision that comes their way. They are a culture of cheats that instead of taking pride in doing the right thing and winning by playing fair, they take pride in getting away with fixing matches, cooking books, handballs, etc. They are completely devoid of any moral obligation and have no right to be even mentioned with those who respect the game.

It appears you are devoid of the history and culture of the sport and that’s just sad, but it doesn’t surprise me since I live in the US and encounter it daily. Think again before making such comments or just don’t read my posts, I don’t care.

    Brian,

I dont think I should know the culture and history of the game to critique your name calling approach. However, only because i know a bit of the sport did I say what i said, and I stand by that. Lets not forget the fact that for the past seventeen years, except for the 2005 CL title, Liverpool hasn’t won any major trophy-ever since the champions league expanded to allow upto four teams from the top leagues in the late 90s, UEFA Cup is seen as a competition for Europe’s second tier teams and not for the best ones. So thats an awfully long time for a club with a “history” and that perhaps explains why you liverpool faithfuls blame others for your losses.

All of us are aware that violence, illlegal betting and transfers, bungs and the like is plaguing the game in europe and not a single league is exempt from these evil practices. Given that background, the English clubs shouldn’t deride Italians about scandals in the latter’s league. Let them tidy up their own house before pointing fingers at others. Moreover, I think its sad to generalize a nation’s behavior, that too in a negative sense.

You definitely don’t know the history. Liverpool have won 8 major trophies this century.

Comparing the problems with Italian football and English football is a joke. Italy is corrupt at the top all the way down to the fans, and until the other clubs that aren’t involved in this disease of corruption (for instance, AS Roma) don’t start calling out and demanding that other clubs play by the same rules that they do, it will never change and they will suffer from the actions of their peers. The English just have fan issues, if you can call those that commit the acts they do, fans. The ‘inner’ club problems of English football are considered a joke by most other leagues, especially Spain and Italy, where ownership of players and transfer policies are very, uh, ambiguous. Some of the goings-on in those two leagues (i.e. co-ownership of players, suitcases) would lead to an immediate relegation for an English club.

If you choose to ignore the history and culture of football, than seriously, don’t read my posts. I call a spade, a spade, and if anybody has a problem with that, that’s their problem.

Sorry, I don’t see a point debating with someone who’s obstinate about his partisanship and vitriolic in his outlook about a certain community.

I agree since you refuse to acknowledge that history and culture matter.
