AC Milan 2, Liverpool 1: Final thoughts

By: Brian | May 24th, 2007

What a disappointing match, not just because of the result, but the fact that the match was lost due to referee error. Liverpool dominated the first half, as AC Milan were no where near quick enough to hang with Gerrard and Pennant as they consistently pushed the ball down field. The course of the game changed drastically with Inzaghi’s handball. Shoulder my ass. It clearly hits his arm, and any ball that comes off the arm of an offensive player and into the goal is a handball. There is no other way to rule it, accidental or not. That one instance of questionable refereeing gave the game to Milan, despite being the weaker side.

If the handball goal doesn’t stand, which it should have not, then Mascherano stays in the game and with ten minutes left in the game, Benitez would have more than likely called off the offside trap and told his backs to sit further back. Those two moves would have negated the second goal. Kaka was Masche’s bitch up to then. Greatest player in the world? I think not. There’s no way Kaka would have gotten that kind of room to make that pass with Masche on and if he somehow did, Inzaghi would have been front marked by either Agger or Carra.

Once they scored the handball goal, it allowed them to play back. It then became nearly impossible for Liverpool to create chances since there were usually ten men behind the ball. Especially since another of our old haunts from this season, the inability to finish, reared it’s ugly head, though Milan’s defenders do deserve credit for closing off passing lanes and narrowing shot perspective whenever one of our players broke free with the ball. It left us with very difficult attempts.

Liverpool were the better team. They attacked tenaciously and created more opportunities. What it all comes down to though is a biased ref who came into the match with a chip on his shoulder regarding English clubs. I’m sure that made it a whole lot easier for him not to call the handball. I’m awfully curious why he was appointed the ref, since not only was his record towards English clubs known, but also this match involved a team, AC Milan, that in recent history, had been twice convicted of match fixing scandals that involved paying to have a favorable ref. You would think UEFA would want to avoid any controversy and appoint the most neutral ref they could, but they didn’t. Then again Platini isn’t a big fan of English clubs either.

Anyhow, the cheats won and the better team goes home knowing that they were screwed. It was a dark day for the sport. At least our boys have the class not to rip off our second place medals, but then again, we are team that is all class and don’t get involved in match fixing scandals and handball goals. I guess that’s why this one doesn’t hurt that much, all you can do is laugh at the clowns of Italy that made this game such a joke. C’est la vie.

Let’s not forget the poor foul call on Xabi that set up the free kick/handball.

of course, that’s it!! It’s a conspiracy! And the Pope, Elvis, and the aliens were involved in this dastardly plot.

Pathetic. Tell yourselves whatever you have to, but the truth is, Liverpool is an inferior team.

You’ll never walk alone with the Community Sheild cup under your arm

and as I have always told you Liverpol fans are SCUM. How can Liverpool fans without tickets get into the game???…… how can liverpool fans without tickets mug their own fans and nick from famililes and children with genuine tickets and how can you justify a Liverpool fan saying ‘we are full of passion and will do ANYTHING to get into the game.’ Which no doubt included the above?!?!?!

    FORZA MILAN

At least Milan fans behaved themselves!!!

    Brian,

This may be of little consolation but there’s a big rumor coming out of Anfield. There’s a guy over at the This Is Anfield forums named GBH. He has an inside connection in the front office and regularly predicts what’s going to happen right before it actually does, and a lot of it out of the blue. I’m not saying he guesses, he legitimately knows the ins and outs. He just said Rafa Benitez is ready to go hard after one Thierry Henry this summer, to the tune of 40 million pounds or so. It probably won’t happen but it’s refreshing to know the Reds won’t be going after the Dirk Kuyt’s of the world this offseason. The cream of the crop is heading to Anfield.

Liverpool didn’t win because they didn’t score. Fact. They had chances and half-chances. They should have put it away before the half. When a team misses that many chances and then makes mistakes that gives the other team goals, I can’t sympathize with them too much. Being an Arsenal fan I’ve seen my team dominate games and create opportunities and lose because they don’t take them all season. Blame the ref all you want- it’s your own damn fault and you should know it.

Here’s a question. Remember near the end of the game when a Milan defender was making an attempt to clear the defensive end and Kuyt stepped in front and blocked it with his rear end. What was the free kick called for? And why did noone question it? I never even got to see a replay. That late in the game, there should have been some type of reasoning for the free kick being awarded to AC Milan.

I remember that play exactly. It was in the 79th minute and Kuyt challenged the Milan defender. The ball deflected off his ass and he ran to pick up the rebound. He was then 2 meter’s from the net and was about to pull the trigger for a easy goal. Then magically the ref blew the whistle.Kuyt then picked up the ball and turned to the direction of the ref with the look of disbelief.I was expecting to see a replay or have some answer from the commentators but there was nothing. Like it never ever happened.Ive been watching Fotball for many years and when my team lose’s I can handle it but Ive never seen something that had angered me so much until this game. This is another black mark on Italian Football and the truth will eventually come out and when it does Liverpool will rightfully be awarded the champions cup trophy.

I sort of don’t like to bring this up, but in a sport where one goal is often the difference in the game, I think it makes sense for FIFA to consider using an American sports method - instant reply. In American Football, questionable calls can be challenged. This has now spread to the NBA. It makes no sense that huge plays like Inzaghi’s handball (definitely did NOT hit his shoulder - it was a textbook example) - which changed the game drastically, should not be challenged and reviewed. If instant replay of the kind used in the NFL was used in this game, that goal would not stand. And sadly, that goal really changed the nature of the second half. LFC was the better club and I took a half day from work to watch them lose because of a crap goal!!
