After being widely reported to have not even travelled with the squad, Mamadou Sakho got the surprise start thanks to Daniel Agger having picked up an injury in training on Sunday. And the club's biggest summer singing couldn't have asked for a worse start, as he pulled out of a tackle on Jonjo Shelvey that allowed the former Liverpool man to run on goal and score the game's opener.

After a dream start at Sakho and Liverpool's expense, Shelvey handed the lead straight back when a blind, lazy pass back to the keeper went straight to Daniel Sturridge. The Liverpool striker, fit enough to start despite missing both of England's matches over the international break, slammed the ball past Michel Vorm for his fourth goal in as many league games. Shelvey was again at fault for Liverpool's second when he turned the ball over to Victor Moses. A smart Sturridge run gave Liverpool's loan signing space to cut inside, and his shot from the edge of the box picked out the bottom corner.

He's yet to show the kind of form this season that made him arguably the signing of January, and a shoulder injury following a late kick out by Ashley Williams won't do anything to help Philippe Coutinho rediscover it. For fans of a bit of handbags with their football, though, Williams' dirty tackle in the second half will at least have kicked off an enjoyably chippy spell.

After appearing increasingly comfortable at right back last season, Andre Wisdom has reverted to playing as though he's never spent a minute at the position. As such it was really no surprise to see Brendan Rodgers replace him with Kolo Toure with just over 20 minutes left in the game, though it wasn't a switch that did much to help a Liverpool side that had begun to struggle to hold possession.
-
While Sakho was generally strong in the air, on the ground the kindest reading would be to suggest he lacks sharpness after being frozen out at PSG and not seeing much action during pre-season. With both Wisdom and Sakho struggling, Liverpool in large part owe the night's point to Martin Skrtel once again doing his best to give Rodgers a selection headache.
