Italy 1: Insigne 79'
A disappointing start to the Euros for England's Liverpool collective, who stumbled to a 0-1 result in Tel Aviv against Italy. Jordan Henderson and Jonjo Shelvey started in the midfield, with Jack Robinson filling in at left-back for the suspended Danny Rose. Fabio Borini got the nod in attack for Italy, combining up front with the impressive Lorenzo Insigne. The opening half was sloppy and disjointed from both side, with the Italians getting the better of the chances and England reverting to an ineffective hoof and hope that rarely featured during their impressive run of performances through qualifying.
It was slightly better in the second half, and England could have taken the lead through Craig Dawson, who headed home a Shelvey corner after a scrap in the penalty area. It was disallowed because of a foul from Steven Caulker, though, and it would prove to be England's last chance until the final moments of the match when a well-taken Henderson free-kick was pushed away by Francesco Bardi. Jack Butland wasn't so fortunate just ten minutes earlier, when Insigne's curled effort beat him at the near post to get what would prove to be the winner.
England will hope to rebound against Norway on Saturday, and they'll be boosted by the returns of Rose and Thomas Ince from suspension and Wilfried Zaha from injury. Mixed performances from the Liverpool contingent might mean a shake-up, most likely for Shelvey and Robinson (who should have conceded a penalty for a clumsy challenge and will be replaced by Rose), though Henderson and Borini will surely continue for their respective sides moving forward.
