Andre Wisdom has come through Liverpool's excellent academy to become a regular fixture in the first team squad. He has been speaking about his progress and the help he's received from Jamie Carragher.
Touted by many as the man to take a centre-back berth in Liverpool teams of the near-future, Andre Wisdom has done his case no harm with a series of confident and muscular displays at right back. The injuries to Martin Kelly and latterly, Jose Enrique, have handed the 19 year old his opportunity and it is fair to say that he has shown a lot of promise.
In an interview with LFC magazine, Wisdom recalled his u-16 days in the academy and the sessions that were taken by Jamie Carrragher, admitting that he "learned a lot from him back then." The young defender gave a valuable insight into why so many see Carragher as a future coach or manager of LFC when he described current first-team training sessions where the veteran "passes on so much information that he's almost doing the job of a coach already."
Wisdom joined Liverpool from Bradford as a 14 year old and has been a regular in England youth teams as he's progressed at the academy. A naturally strong physique has smoothed the transition from level to level but the young man realises that he cannot simply rely on his impressive strength and power at Premiership level. As part of Brendan Rodgers' team, Wisdom acknowledges that he must be proficient both "technically and tactically" and says that these are areas he's "always working on."
The question of where he sees himself playing in years to come is refreshingly fielded by the youngster who, pleasingly, seems to have no agenda other than just being "on the pitch." Worryingly for Pepe Reina, Wisdom even claimed he would play in goal if it meant a first team shirt! We can only hope his remarkable progress continues because, in Andre Wisdom, Liverpool have a potentially top-class defender for years to come.
