Recent signing Phillipe Coutinho joins the Reds from Internazionale for a reputed £8.5 million fee, as far as FSG's template of securing young, talented footballers who's future value could generate a sizeable profit Coutinho appears to fit this manifesto.
So far under Rodgers reign Liverpool have acquired Samed Yesil (forward), Assaidi (winger), Borini (forward), Allen (centre mid), Sturridge (forward), i've offset the loan signing Nuri Sahin being as he has now returned to Borussia Dortmund. In terms of departures Adam, Aquilani(centre mids), Maxi and Cole(attacking mids), Kuyt, Bellamy and Carroll (winger/forwards), therefore in total LFC have lost 2 central midfielders, 2 attacking midfielders and 3 forwards, replacing them with 3 forwards, a winger, central midfielder and now Coutinho who has been deemed to be an attacking midfielder. This is without taking into consideration the promotion of Sterling (winger) into the first team.
As mentioned above, Coutinho has been stated as being an attacking midfielder, with the new signing being awarded the No.10 shirt, traditionally in English football a deep lying centre forward who floats between the midfield or attack it's likely that on first impressions Coutinho will be supplying the attack. However, I tend to think that with Rodgers preferred formation being a 4-3-3, Coutinho will be asked to play in a slightly deeper role than he's previously played, meaning he's going to up against the likes of Fellaini, Diaby, Yaya Toure to name a few of the stronger central midfielders who play in England. Therefore I can't imagine that Coutinho will be restricted to simply orchestrating the midfield from the centre of the park, like Xabi used to do, I would expect that with a base of Lucas, Gerrard, Allen and Henderson, Countinho like Shelvey has done (with great affect against West Ham) to suppport Sturridge and Suarez by making runs from the midfield.
LFC have now had 2 transfer windows to readdress the squad, it appears that Rodgers type of player seems to be those who are flexible and possess fine technique combined with plenty of athleticism. Of course, only time will tell whether these signings will be a success and it will be interesting to see the type of central defender or goalkeeper Rodgers will try to sign in the summer but for now LFC appear to planning for there offensive future.
